Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban and rapper Pitbull are going above and beyond to help residents of Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane Maria.
Relief efforts have been slow following the Category 4 storm that hit the island last Wednesday, and much of the territory is still without power, water and supplies. On Monday, Cuban loaned the Dallas Mavericks' private plane to point guard J.J. Barea to bring essential supplies to his native island, according to ESPN. The trip meant Barea had to miss the first day of Mavericks training camp.
"They loaded up a bunch of stuff, supplies, etc., to take over to Puerto Rico, and they're going to turn around and come back," ESPN reports Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle saying. "[Barea]'s going to take his mom and grandmother back with him, and my understanding is his dad is going to stay over there and slug it out with all of the recovery efforts."
Barea, who is the only Puerto Rican player currently active in the league, has also started an online fundraiser with his wife, Viviana Ortiz, and raised more than $130,000 thus far to help with relief efforts. Carmelo Anthony, whose father is Puerto Rican, similarly launched a campaign that's raised over $250,000.
Also pitching in his private plane to speed relief efforts is rapper Pitbull. CNN reports that he's using the aircraft to bring Puerto Rican cancer patients to the mainland U.S. for chemotherapy.
As of Tuesday, just 11 of the island's 69 hospitals had power, according to CNN.

Mark Zuckerberg pledged $1.5 million in aid to organizations assisting in Puerto Rico’s recovery from Hurricane Maria, together with direct assistance from Facebook’s connectivity team to help the country get back online. The hurricane left 80 percent of the island without power, and citizens have faced intense shortages of food, fuel, and drinking water in the seven days since landfall. A FEMA briefing on Tuesday reported that only 11 of the islands 69 hospitals had power.
The $1.5 million donation is split between the World Food Programme, an anti-hunger organization, and NetHope, a consortium of non-profits that works to improve connectivity in undeveloped or disaster-stricken areas. Zuckerberg asked concerned followers to donate to Save The Children, which is working to distribute aid on the island.
Zuckerberg emphasized the importance of communications in the recovery effort. “With 90% of cell towers on the island out of service, people can't get in touch with their loved ones, and it's harder for rescue workers to coordinate relief efforts,” the Facebook CEO wrote. “We're sending the Facebook connectivity team to deliver emergency telecommunications assistance to get the systems up and running.”
The company also plans to use donated Facebook ad space to share critical information with Puerto Rican users, although the ads will be of little use until power and connectivity is restored.
Last but, definitely not least Queen B, Beyonce Carter will be donating her proceeds from her new song to hurricane relief charities for Puerto Rico, Mexico and the other affected Caribbean islands.
